Festival Overview

Gaur Purnima commemorates the auspicious appearance of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who appeared on the full moon day (Purnima) of the month of Phalguna. Lord Chaitanya is considered the combined incarnation of Radha and Krishna, appearing in the mood of Srimati Radharani to taste the sweetness of love for Lord Krishna.

This festival celebrates the beginning of the sankirtan movement and the spread of the holy names throughout the world. Lord Chaitanya's mission was to establish the yuga-dharma (religion for this age) through the chanting of the holy names.

Historical Significance

Divine Incarnation

Lord Chaitanya appeared in 1486 CE in Mayapur, West Bengal, as the son of Jagannatha Misra and Saci Devi. His golden complexion and extraordinary spiritual qualities marked Him as a divine personality from birth.
